Public Policy Specialist for Water Projects - Senior

Are you up for the challenge of being responsible for representing Colorado Springs Utilities in establishing and maintaining strategic positive business relationships with county, state, and federal policy and decision makers? Do you thrive on collaborating with subject matter experts in providing research and analysis to leadership on key industry trends and policy issues?  Do you have previous experience in public affairs? If so, then this is the job for you!

What your day will look like…

  • Developing and managing issue position documents and coordinating messaging and outreach with Colorado Springs Utilities’ water resources and communications teams
  • Developing and maintaining relationships with county, state, and federal elected officials and their staffs, trade associations, and key community stakeholders to shape public policy and public opinion on Colorado Springs Utilities’ water supply, projects, initiatives, and programs
  • Actively participating in public policy discussions on water and regional projects, plans, and initiatives to identify potential impact to the organization’s business operations and strategic initiatives
  • Supporting major water projects and Board initiatives through the development and implementation of strategic stakeholder engagement plans
  • Providing advice and recommendations to management regarding policy decisions that impact major water projects
  • Monitoring the legislative process to assess the impact of state and federal regulations on major water projects
  • Designing and implementing strategies to mitigate the impacts of legislative/regulatory proposals on major water projects
  • Supporting the general state and federal advocacy efforts of the Government Affairs Department

What will it take to be successful in this position…

  • A bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Public Administration, Public Relations, Business, or a closely related field is preferred
  • Foundational understanding of Colorado water and environmental laws
  • Familiarity with Colorado geography and politics
  • Demonstrated experience working within a relevant public policy-oriented field is highly desirable
