Water Recycling for Power Generation at the Palo Verde Nuclear Plant

ABSTRACT:Pat will describe water recycling for thermoelectric power generation at the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station near Phoenix, the largest electricity generator in the US including: current strategies, future concerns, and potential technical solutions. Palo Verde uses ~60 million gallons per day of treated Phoenix municipal wastewater for cooling, and discharges 2 3 MGD of cooling tower blowdown to on-site evaporation ponds. Phoenix is raising the cost of the wastewater; the ponds are filling up; and Arizona wants to rely more on renewables. What to do?
